We would like to welcome Kate John to the Darker Signing!
Kate John is the horror pen name of Katie M. John. Although established as a writer of upper YA fiction of both the fantasy and contemporary romance kind, all of her books have skirted with the darker side of storytelling. Finding a fascination in notions of evil and transgression, Katie has at last penned her first adult horror novel, ‘The Crow Man’ which will be out in the winter of 2016.
Previously, she has had several short horror stories published in collaborative anthologies and the Sirens Call Horror e-zine. In 2010, her first horror short won ‘The Indie Horror Spring Writer’s Award’ for her short story, ‘The Venus Club’ – a decadent tale about cannibalism.
Writing dark psychological horror, Kate John aims to write horror that not only freaks the heeby-jeebies out of you, but also explore the idea of women in horror, both as victims and perpetrators, as well as testing the boundaries of human expression through criminality. ‘The Crow Man’ Kate’s first ‘adult’ horror explores the story of Grace Waters, a 1950’s housewife who is accused of murdering her children – but just as Grace knows that her children were murdered at the hands of the terrifying spectre of The Crow Man, so does the reader, and Kate pulls the reader along for the harrowing ride into insanity that comes with a sane woman committed to a lunatic asylum.
Horror has always held a fascination for Kate John, and in 2008 she completed her Literature MA with a study into the works of Bret Easton Ellis, Chuck Palahniuk and the film director Eli Roth, exploring the links between transgressive libertine horror and developed and developing world economic economy cycles – an idea that continues to fascinate her to this day. Kate John lives in London with her husband, two daughters, and cat Misty.
She is now a full time writer after having thrown in the day job as an English teacher to pursue her writing, publishing and events career. She is founder of the ethical small press house, Little Bird Publishing House, which currently publishes the works of twelve authors, and she is also founder of Chapter.Con, a specially designed conference for publishers and authors which promotes the sharing and development of writing and publishing skills, as well as having a fun building a strong creative community.
When not writing, Kate loves cooking, photography and all other things creative. She is currently about to undertake her professional qualifications in psychotherapy, which she sees as an integral part of her author and publishing work.
She is super excited to be attending ‘The Darker Side of Fiction’ in 2017 and will be bringing ‘The Crow Man’ alongside some of her darker Upper YA fiction written under the name Katie M. John.
Currently, she does not have a separate website for her horror writing (although one will be coming in the near future) in the meantime, you can find out more about her at
