We would like to welcome Matthew Drzymala to the Leeds signing!
So, you’ve got this far and want to know more about me. Well, that’s lovely and I thank you muchly!
Well, I’ll tell you a bit about who I am and about my books.
My name is Matthew Drzymala and I am originally from Manchester, England. I grew up in the North of the city, building dens and having mud fights in the street with my brothers, Robert and Adam.
It’s true, it sounds like something from The Beano, but I can proudly say we once had a den in the garden with special codes to get inside.
My sister, Lisa, never joined us, no doubt she was sitting in her room listening to Madonna or taping the Top 40 off the radio.
I’ve grown up a lot since then even if I did once, accidentally, smack Adam in the face with a cricket bat. If you opt to stand in the back swing, you will pay the price.
I now live in Liverpool with my fiancée, Elaine. She’s my rock and my constant supporter.
I loved writing at school, once winning an award when I was 11 for the best class story, though the teacher said it was too violent, which I still refute to this day.
Then I stopped writing…
I don’t have a fantastical tale like a lot of writers, who seem to have written since they were technically still too young to hold a pen, but I found my way back in the end. I took part in NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writers Month) in 2011 before taking a Creative Writing course in 2012/13.
And I haven’t stopped since.
I mainly write comedy books, as seen in my series, The Bumpkinton Tales. They are humorous stories set in the rural village of Bumpkinton and they’re packed with a cast of quirky, colourful characters.
I’ve been asked a few times in interviews if any of my books are about me, to which I always say, Brainstorm. This is a darker story than my Bumpkinton releases and is centred around Clinical Psychologist, Michael Eriksson. Parts of that story happened in my life, mostly when I was in my late teens and early twenties, so it’s a personal story but it was one I loved writing.
Meeting writers, it’s not all about me…
Being an author is also about meeting other writers. To connect with those people just crazy enough to want to inhabit the strange world you live in too.
So, after months of searching for a writing group that was right for me, I decided to set one up myself. It’s called The Laid-back Writer’s Group and we meet one Sunday a month at Central Library in Liverpool. I’ve met some fantastic writers there and it’s a joy to listen to their work.
I’m also working towards my Diploma to become a Freelance Copywriter, a massively different skill to writing books and once it’s done I can really look at making writing my full-time job and my hobby.
So, that’s all there is to say about me for now. I’m sure I’ll update the more my writing progresses and I hope you will join me as I go.
See you in Leeds!
