Thanks for darker.

It has taken us a while to get the words together to write this post and the reason for that is that we have been soaking up all the Darkness! We’ve Just loved reading the blog posts, seeing the pictures and enjoying all the wonderful comments.

Thought we would start at the beginning and go back a year….

As I’m (Rachel) part of the Orchard book club I have been lucky enough over the years to have been blogging and interacting with so many great authors from all genres and in all stages of their writing careers; so with our notebooks at the ready Jo and I thought it would be just amazing to be able to put a signing together showcasing authors writing the darker side of fiction. At first the struggle to bring horror and crime authors out from behind the computer screen was hard, bit by bit we found ourselves with a totally wicked darker family of authors.

The run up was a real roller coaster and totally consumed our lives for over 12 months, the Darker Event was something different from other signings we have hosted and we loved every single minute of it!

We wanted the signing and the evening ball to have a really close and friendly feel, keeping it intimate and personal all the way through. The readers group was such a fun place to post in and all the members totally embraced all things dark, well except for clowns that is! By posting and promoting everyday, you guys joining us, plus adding the little touches, we think we achieved the effect we were striving for.

The night before the event myself and Jo went to the hotel to setup, the nerves were quite high and I don’t think we had eaten or slept for days, it was like planning a wedding for 40 brides and grooms lol. Once a few of the authors had started to arrive they were popping into the hall to say hello, hugs were exchanged and we started to relax into it all. When we had finished the hall, we popped into the bar for a well needed drink! It was lovely to see everyone chatting, comparing travel stories; the laughter was contagious. It was reluctantly that we slipped off home leaving all the fun and wine behind, we needed to do some final checks and get some beauty sleep! (at least until the 5am alarm went off!)

Jo and I are big on lists, ( mostly Jo) we had ticked all the boxes and just knew we had it all covered, even down to the finest detail; it was just the butterflies that were going wild! We had arranged a meet and greet coffee for all the authors to chat and fill up on caffeine plus it gave us a few minutes to compose ourselves before the rest of our guests arrived.

We knew it would run smoothly and we had the makings of a great event. With the help of our terrific friends, amazing authors, assistants and of course the fabulous guests that came, the day went seamlessly. What we hadn’t imagined was the way everyone would embrace the day, the tables and banners looked fantastic and gave the room a fabulous feel to it. Our Horror model ladies certainly stayed in character the whole time! 9.55am arrived and we both left the room with our ticket guest list, wrist bands and scanner at the ready (those butterflies were still doing loops). The buzz of excitement from the fans was awesome, everyone chatting whilst they waited the last few minutes for the main doors to open.

From start to finish the mood was immense, full of laughter. Every single author was just so lovely and friendly, everyone that attended seemed to be full of smiles; so we felt pretty pleased with ourselves 🙂

A quick bite to eat and before we knew it the afternoon got into full swing, streams of fans walked round the hall. Looking for their favourite authors and discovering new ones to chat to. There were so many little moments that touched us, the hugs from people we had chatted to online to, then being grabbed for pictures.
The view was a hall full of amazing people, banners, laughing and camera flashes….. we were overwhelmed and cried happy tears.

Then a super quick turn around in the hall to transform it into the evening ball, again the finer details took time to set up and we literally threw on our ball dresses lol! The effect was just what we wanted even though we were not allowed the smoke machine or the clowns lol. The magian was terrific, the food was delicious the DJ was a bit old school but the company was epic! We danced and drank the rest of the night away ~ well until the bar closed! We gave our last hugs and said goodnight to everyone before collecting up the few mementos and table decorations that were left behind.

Too high on emotion for the night to end we slipped off to the residents bar, chatting and recounting some of the details that had made us laugh or caught our eye throughout the night.

There are so many people to thank for all the support, help and encouragement from start to finish we have been truly lucky to have had you all with us. We have to mention Krista Webster and Len, Paula and Clare our Hourglass team at darker did a brilliant job of making it all run smoothly. Have to thank Jodie from Swag Squad for doing the Darker merchandise . Not to forget our families for putting up with the constant late night meetings and darker talk! We would also like to thank the authors that believed in us and the authors that took a chance on us; we really appreciate that you chose to sign with us. Victoria,Claire and Charlie you ladies are awesome, thank you for the pep talks, your energy and smiles are infectious!

Thank you to everyone who came to Darker, without you all it would have been just an empty hall, you guys made this event! So thank you all 🙂

Lots of love
Rachel and Jo

xx

About

I am the mother of two beautiful girls who are growing up so fast, the wife of a cute guy in a uniform (my own personal hero), and a writer.
My family will tell you it doesn’t exactly fall into that order. Especially around dinner time when I “Cook” from a takeout menu with my face plastered to my computer.
I also have two cats who I adore more than I should, like more than people I know, and a dog. He is a beagle who is naughty but just so darned cute. He gives you that little beagle face and then steals your slice of pizza.
I have a busy mind and even busier fingers. I can write fast and keep track of a large cast, but I can’t remember why I’m at the grocery store. I try to write lists but they always end up being notes for books or indie bands. I LOVE INDIE MUSIC!
I talk to myself in the car and sing too loud for my skill level. The invention of Bluetooth has made talking in the car less awkward but if you hear me singing, run.
I love writing. I love my characters like they are my friends and I am telling their version of the truth.
My worst flaw is the horrid English accent which I read everything with. If I read aloud it comes too. I’m not English, so I can’t even do the accent which makes it awkward for anyone who is nearby.
My favourite authors are Robert Jordan and Jane Austen and Robert Mccammon and Jim Crace. I think Stephen King and Dean Koontz have the most unique imaginations. I have the hardest time not LOVING Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger. I know all the serial killers have a copy but I adored that novel. It made me feel a thousand different things and one of them was more alive. (And not in the least bit serial killer-ish)
When I grow up I want to be James Patterson or Nora Roberts. I aspire to be like them, always trying to hone my skills and work harder.
My genres are all over the map. I have Paranormal Romance, Contemporary Romance, Science Fiction, Erotica (under Sophie Starr my porn name so my mom doesn’t know), Thrillers, and even some Romantic Comedies.

Thanks for checking me out and I hope you got lost in something I wrote or it made you so HAPPY/SAD/BLISSFUL/TURNED ON/ANGRY/EXCITED/FRIGHTENED/HORRIFIED/MAD that you couldn’t believe it.

The list of what is coming out this year is not completed. I will keep my Facebook page as up to date as I can.
Here is a short breakdown of my genres and pen names.

TARA BROWN- My main page and essentially my brand. Books published under Tara Brown will be adult and mostly suspense and romance. The Lonely and Single Lady Spy Series are among those. Not intended for young readers, at all. 18 and over.

AE WATSON – My pen name for Young Adult books. Born, HERE, The Seventh Day, White Girl Problems, etc. This is my page that is safe for YA readers of a mature reading level.

ERIN LEIGH – Adult Romance and Chick Lit. 18 and over recommended reading level.

TL BROWN – Adult Paranormal, Science Fiction, and Fantasy. NOT FOR YOUNG READERS AT ALL!!

SOPHIE STARR – Adult Only Erotica. NOT FOR YOUNG READERS AT ALL!!!!!!!!

We would like to welcome Heather Shere to the Leeds signing!

1484108_559486654216880_792415278657270949_n

The words you type have the ability to bring your mind to life.

Romance writer with a fancy for everything thats bad for you.

Heather Shere is a wife of twenty some odd years and wants you to know that you get less for murder. She’s also the mother of two adult shaped kids, who she thinks she messed up just enough to make them highly successful individuals, who are also hilarious.
She has a masters degree in snark and nothing entertains her more than someone who can word battle with her. She considers herself an awesome cook and an expert baker but wants to eat out most days, however nothing is made ‘the right way’ unless she makes it herself.
When she gets bored she likes to tinker with different hobbies like crocheting, scrapbooking, stamping and card making. Her newest and most fulfilling passion is writing and she welcomes you into the deep dark depths of her mind.

We would like to welcome  Emma L Adams to the Leeds signing!

10155614_737968856278006_808052196666808425_n

Emma spent her childhood creating imaginary worlds to compensate for a disappointingly average reality, so it was probably inevitable that she ended up writing speculative fiction. She was born in Birmingham, UK, which she fled at the first opportunity to study English Literature at Lancaster University. In her three years at Lancaster, she hiked up mountains, skydived in Australia, and endured a traumatic episode involving a swarm of bees in the Costa Rican jungle. She also entertained her creative writing group and baffled her tutors by submitting strange fantasy tales featuring dragons and supernatural monsters to workshops. These included her first publication, a rather bleak dystopian piece, and a disturbing story about a homicidal duck (which she hopes will never see the light of day).

Now a reluctant graduate, Emma refuses to settle down and be normal. When not embarking on wild excursions and writing fantasy novels, she edits and proofreads novels for various publishing houses and reads an improbable number of books. Emma is currently working on the Alliance series, a multiple-universe adult fantasy featuring magic, monsters, cool gadgets and sarcasm. She also wrote the Darkworld series, published by Curiosity Quills Press.

We would like to welcome Elle Brooke to the Leeds signing!

Author of Reveal, Promises Hurt, Forgotten Promises and Empty Promises.

Writer. Reader. Caffeine Addict.

Hello…

I’m Elle and I’m a little neurotic. I function on a tiny amount of sleep and a huge amount of caffeine. I love green skittles and have an irrational fear of stormy weather. When i’m not writing about super hot college guys, you can generally find me googling them…all in the name of research of course. I can be persuaded to do just about anything with the promise of a good book or a bottle of bubbles. Oh, and I also love to write.

You can find my novels, Reveal, Promises Hurt, Forgotten Promises and Empty Promises on Amazon, iBooks, Nook, Kobo and B&N.

We would like to welcome CJ Wells to the Leeds signing!

This will be the first time these ladies have signed in the UK and we are so thrilled they will be joining us in Leeds next year, sure you will all give them a warm family welcome.

Co-Authors, and sisters, Christa Gibbs and Jill Syed reside in Ontario, Canada. Born and raised on da’Rock [a.k.a. St. John’s, Newfoundland], their laid back personalities and eclectic sense of humor is indicative of their native roots. Although fluent in Newfinese, both are quite eloquently spoken, showing no remnants of an accent unless alcohol is involved.

Fluent in air-guitar [she trained in Europe], Christa, by day, transforms into her Executive role in the Property Management World. This wonderful position lends credence to her altruistic life experiences lived vicariously through the many residents within her keep. This translates beautifully to her evening endeavors, which include creating lovable characters and interesting storylines [when she’s not catering to her loving ‘Oooge’ — a.k.a. biker hubby]. An avid reader of erotic romance [upwards of two to three novels per week], Christa decided to give her own incessant fairytale sex-capade fantasies a voice.

When she is not behind the camera in her Photography Studio, Jill spends portions of her days mentally cataloging all the reasons why she shouldn’t become an indulgent drinker at the helm of her three young children during the absences of her Pilot husband [though you will hear her undying love and devotion for them often: “blessed”]. Passionately creative, Jill spent many years capturing life moments on film, canvas and even paper. Having dabbled in the writing of many children’s books, all of which ended up covered in dust and never carried through, clarity hit once she collaborated with her sister: “Ohhh, the steamy sex was the missing ingredient”.
